In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful

Islamic Center of Richmond is deeply anguished by the current turmoil in the society and calls to end all types of racism, racial discrimination, and abuse of power, resulting in the death of innocent people.

We believe that all human beings are equal in the sight of Allah except in piety and good actions[1]. Prophet Muhammad said, “There is no superiority of an Arab over a non-Arab, nor for any non- Arab over an Arab; also a white has no superiority over a black nor a black has any superiority over white except by piety and good action”. All Americans, irrespective of race, religion, color, or creed must come together and strive towards eradicating the scourge of racism and racial discrimination present in our country.

Establishment of social justice and preservation of individual rights to live with dignity are fundamental Islamic teachings and enshrined in the constitution of this great country. We have been ordered in the Quran to stand firmly for justice even if the offenders belong to our family[2]. We call on the Government to establish justice by bringing the perpetrators of abuse of power to account and enable the process of healing for those affected.

We understand that justice can only be established by preventing the oppressor from oppressing[3]. Our constitution allows peaceful protests to raise our voice. We urge everyone to exercise their rights within the purview of the constitution and not cross limits by damaging the properties, looting and violence.

Finally, We recognize our Creator’s order to eradicate racism and establish an egalitarian society. We pledge to join hands to work towards ending racism in our society and help establish justice. We commit to protect and preserve the dignity of all and uplift the most vulnerable in our society. We urge you all to join in this endeavor.

References:[1]. The Prophet Mohammed (peace be upon him) said, “O people! your Lord is one, and there is no superiority of an Arab over a non-Arab, nor for any non- Arab over an Arab; also a white has no superiority over a black nor a black has any superiority over white except by piety and good action. Verily, the most honorable of you with Allah is the one who has most Taqwa (God consciousness)” (Sayings from  the book of Al-Baihaqi).

[2]. Allah says, “O you who believe! Stand out firmly for justice, as witnesses to Allah, even though it be against yourselves, or your parents, or your kin, be he rich or poor, Allah is a Better Protector to both (than you). So, follow not the lusts (of your hearts), lest you avoid justice, and if you distort your witness or refuse to give it, verily, Allah is Ever Well-Acquainted with what you do” (The Holy Qur’an, Chapter 4, Verse 135).

[3] The Prophet Mohammed (peace be upon him) said, “Help your brother, whether he is an oppressor or he is an oppressed one. People asked, “O Allah’s Messenger! It is all right to help him if he is oppressed, but how should we help him if he is an oppressor?” The Prophet said, “By preventing him from oppressing others”. (Sayings from the book of Al Bukhari)
